Since 1993, drivers who appreciate a safe, roomy, comfortable, and dependable midsize sedan have chosen the Nissan Altima. This sporty sedan has room for up to five passengers from a brand synonymous with high quality and affordability. Whether you are a commuter who wants a fuel-efficient ride or a family driver who knows the importance of getting places safely, the Altima offers a vehicle with something for everyone. The latest model is the 2024 Nissan Altima, and it is part of the sixth generation of this venerable sedan. It is a tribute to the quality of a model that can last this long on the market, with incremental changes from year to year and major overhauls with each generational change.

The 2024 Altima builds on last year’s refresh with a few minor tweaks. It continues to feature a very affordable price tag, with a base MSRP of $25,730 for the S model.[a] In all, you can choose from five different trims on the 2024 Altima, ranging from the entry-level S and the mid-level SV and SR to the top luxury SL trim and the performance-oriented SR VC Turbo model. This gives drivers the choices they need to find an Altima that works best for them and their lifestyle.

  • Performance

A white 2024 Nissan Altima SE is shown driving on an open road.

Nissan continues to offer two engine options on the 2024 Nissan Altima. All models feature the 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine, except for the SR VC Turbo, which comes equipped with a 2.0-liter VC Turbo I-4. In addition, the models with the 2.5-liter engine give you a choice of front-wheel drive or the Nissan Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. The only exceptions are the entry-level Altima S and the Altima SR VC Turbo, which are front-wheel drive only.

    The Standard 2.5-Liter I-4 Engine

The 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine has a dual overhead camshaft configuration with 16 valves for its four cylinders. It utilizes direct fuel injection and a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System to provide efficient performance. Front-wheel drive models with this engine have a slightly higher output than ones with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. A front-wheel drive 2024 Altima with this engine will give you up to 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, a 2024 Altima with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive will deliver 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Nevertheless, choosing the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive will give you improved traction, especially if you are driving your Altima in inclement weather.

    The 2.0-Liter VC-Turbo I-4 Engine

The 2024 Nissan Altima SR VC Turbo model features the 2.0-liter VC Turbo engine. VC, in this case, stands for variable compression turbocharger, and it is designed to give the Altima a more performance-oriented approach. This engine also has a DOHC configuration but utilizes a turbocharger electronic sequential multi-point fuel injection in addition to direct fuel injection to boost performance. The result is an astounding 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.

    Transmission

Each 2024 Nissan Altima pairs its engine with an Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Xtronic CVT is designed to seamlessly shift through a range of effective gear ratios. This differs from manual and automatic transmissions that have a fixed number of gear ratios with hard shifts between each one. The result is a more efficient and responsive approach, allowing the smaller engines on the Altima to deliver quicker acceleration. In keeping with its performance-oriented design, the SR VC Turbo model adds a set of paddle shifters that allow you to emulate the performance of a manual transmission without the hassle of working a clutch.

    Fuel Economy

One thing that stands out for the 2024 Nissan Altima is its exceptional fuel economy across all trim levels and engine options. No matter which Altima model you choose, you are going to see the kind of gas mileage that will save you money regardless of whether you are a commuter, an occasional driver, or a family driver. The most fuel-efficient of the three options is the 2024 Altima with front-wheel drive and the 2.5-liter I-4 engine. This will get you up to 32 MPG in combined fuel economy, including an astounding 39 MPG in highway driving. If you choose the same engine on your Altima with all-wheel drive, you will still get a very impressive 30 MPG in combined fuel economy. Even the high-performance Altima SR VC Turbo will give you a solid 29 MPG in combined fuel economy, so you can save money without compromising speed and acceleration.

    Speed and Acceleration

Nissan has built a reputation for making vehicles that get exceptional performance with small and efficient engines. The 2024 Altima is no exception to this, regardless of which engine you choose. If you decide on an Altima with the 2.5-liter I-4 engine and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, you should be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds with a top speed of 119 mph. This is plenty of acceleration to allow you to easily merge onto a busy highway, even in rush hour. If you have a need for more speed, then the Altima SR VC Turbo is the model for you. This uses its 2.0-liter VC Turbo I-4 engine to go from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 5.9 seconds. It even has a top speed of 142 mph, but we recommend you obey the local speed limits.

  • Interior

The black interior of a 2024 Nissan Altima SR VC-Turbo shows the seating and dashboard.

The 2024 Nissan Altima continues to offer a roomy interior in this model, something that has always been the case dating back to its introduction over 30 years ago. This is because the designers at Nissan have done an excellent job of maximizing the amount of space inside the passenger compartment while also providing a spacious trunk for all of your belongings.

    Passenger Space

Depending on which model you choose, you can get up to 100.6 cu.ft. of passenger space inside your 2024 Altima. If you choose one with a moonroof, this figure will go down slightly to a still very spacious 98.8 cu.ft. This is plenty of space for up to five passengers to relax inside.

In addition, Nissan has done an exceptional job of apportioning space between the first and second rows. For example, front-row passengers can enjoy up to 39.1 inches of headroom, while those seated in the back can get 36.7 inches; this will give you and your passengers more space between the tops of your heads and the roofs so you can feel more comfortable. Similarly, while the first row of seats has 43.8 inches of legroom, your second-row passengers will still get 35.2 inches to stretch out their legs. This will come in handy on longer drives, where limited legroom can make those seated in the back feel cramped.

    Seating Enhancements

Interior comfort is a key component of the Altima. Depending on which trim level you choose, you will get an attractive and comfortable space for your passengers. The entry-level Altima S features cloth fabric seat covers with carbon-fiber interior finishes. This gives this model a look that is more than you can expect from most base-model sedans. The SV model adds attractive wood-tone trims to highlight key parts of the Altima’s interior space.

The Altima SR upgrades the interior to feature sports cloth upholstered seats and a Piano Black interior finish with silver geometric trim. The luxury-oriented SL trim has leather seats that are heated in front, a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Piano Black interior with Dark Teak wood-tone trim, while the performance-oriented SR VC Turbo has sport leather-appointed seats that are heated in front, as well as a Piano Black interior with carbon fiber look trim.

    Trunk Space

The 2024 Altima’s trunk opens up to 15.4 cu.ft. of cargo space. This is plenty of room for all of your groceries when you go food shopping, as well as luggage for all five passengers if you decide to take your Altima on a road trip.

  • Technology

Nissan has built a reputation for using technology to provide improved performance on its vehicles. You can see this on the 2024 Altima with such features as its Xtronic CVT transmission and the available Intelligent all-wheel drivetrain. Two areas where innovation truly stands out for the 2024 Nissan Altima is in the areas of passenger safety and connectivity.

    Standard Safety Features

The 2024 Altima has made safety standard on every model. This is because you get Nissan’s standard set of driver assistance features on every trim level of the Altima. Intelligent Forward Collision Warning will detect an impending front-end collision and send you an audible alert so you can take evasive action. This will also engage the Automatic Emergency Braking system that will help you avoid a collision or reduce the impact if it is unavoidable. This system even has Pedestrian Detection, which is designed to detect a passenger in the path of your Altima and use the emergency brakes to bring you to a stop before an accident occurs.

Changing lanes can often be a challenge on a busy highway. Blind Spot Warning will take away the mystery by alerting you to any vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane so you can avoid an accident. This feature is one that most other brands only offer as an optional feature. Similarly, Lane Departure Warning will let you know if you are drifting out of your lane into an adjacent or oncoming lane so you can take proper evasive action. Intelligent Driver Alertness works similarly with the system, letting you know if it thinks you are getting fatigued and need to take a much-needed break.

These driver assistance systems even help you when you need to back out of a parking space. The standard RearView Monitor will show you the space behind your Altima, but everyone knows that is often not enough. The Rear Sonar System will spot any other vehicle or pedestrian about to cross behind your Altima, while the Rear Cross Traffic Alert will let you know if this is about to occur. If you don’t immediately stop, the Rear Automatic Braking will kick in to stop you from having an accident.

With all of these standard driver assistance features, it is no wonder that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Altima a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2023 model year. In fact, this is the fourth straight year that the Altima has received this top designation from the IIHS.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

No matter where you go, your Altima will help you and your passengers stay connected and entertained with the standard NissanConnect infotainment system. The Altima S model has a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SV and SR models feature an 8-inch screen, and the SL and SR VC Turbo have an enormous 12.3-inch screen. All of the models have Bluetooth hands-free connectivity so that you can make hands-free calls and texts.

Nissan also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility on all models except the S, with the SL and SR VC Turbo offering wireless service, which will come in handy if you accidentally leave your charging cables at home. Nissan has also expanded the length of its trial for the NissanConnect Services from six months on the prior year’s model to a full three years on the 2024 Altima. This will give you such services as remote locking and engine starting. This can come in handy if you want to heat up your Altima on cold winter mornings.
