  • Overview

A silver 2022 Nissan Rogue Platinum is shown facing left.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is the next evolution of the compact crossover. With an all-new powertrain propelling the Rogue to new performance heights, the 2022 model year separates itself from the competition by embracing new technologies and advancements in fuel-saving ventures. For those who want a compact SUV that isn't just another generic entry in the very crowded segment, the 2022 Nissan Rogue is the way to go.

New for the model year is a swap out of the old 2.5-liter 4-cylinder for a 1.5-liter variable compression turbocharged 3-cylinder, aptly known as the VC-Turbo. The new powertrain provides improved overall fuel economy and more power, giving the 2022 Nissan Rogue a much stronger appeal on the market. The compact crossover is available across four different trims in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive.

  • Performance

A red 2022 Nissan Rogue is shown driving down a city street.

The heart of the 2022 Nissan Rogue is the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder VC-Turbo engine. The compact crossover is propelled by the variable compression turbocharged engine, which is attached to the Xtronic CVT, which is a continuously variable transmission. These variable and continuous components relate to how the Rogue dynamically adjusts its performance based on how it is driven.

    Nissan's Variable Compression Technology

The 3-cylinder VC-Turbo utilizes an additional control arm for the pistons to adjust their maximum stroke distance, which can change the engine's compression ratios. In turn, this allows the Rogue to dynamically provide power for when the driver needs it. Alternatively, during more modest traveling sessions, the compression is altered for better fuel efficiency.

The way it works is that the control arm changes the maximum height of the piston's cycle, so it makes longer cycles with a high 14:1 compression ratio for better fuel efficiency and less fuel expenditure. Alternatively, you have a more stable boost from a low 8:1 compression ratio due to having a shorter stroke cycle. This works in conjunction with a dynamic exhaust camshaft and a two-tier fuel system that includes port injection and direct injection. The port injection works with less demanding use, rationing the fuel to accommodate lighter workloads, while the direct injection automatically kicks in when higher fuel requirements are detected for more power.

    More Power, More Efficiency

While it may seem rather complicated, the reality is that for the end-user, it means more power while using up less fuel. This is because instead of delivering maximum power at all times, it offers more efficient use of the powertrain during light stop-and-go traveling. Alternatively, when you need the boost in the passing lane on the highway, the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo is more than adequate enough for accomplishing the task.

The engine outputs 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. That's a noticeable power improvement over the 2021 Nissan Rogue's 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, which would output 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The improvement in power also comes with the aforementioned benefit in fuel efficiency, which is an estimated 33 miles per gallon combined.

Combined with the continuously variable transmission, which has also had its efficiency increased by improving the gear ratio spread for better utilization of torque, and improved shift responses, the Nissan Rogue has been redesigned to be a much better performing compact crossover. The new changes and further upgrades add to the overall value of the SUV, especially in the performance department. This makes for a unique driving experience for the 2022 Rogue, accommodating both performance and fuel economy, making it viable for a wide number of different kinds of drivers.
