  • Overview

A grey 2023 Nissan Frontier SV is shown angled left.

Sometimes a classic needs updating. Times change and technology evolves, so vehicles need to change as well. The key is to keep the features that made the model great while providing an upgrade on performance. This is definitely the case with the 2022 Nissan Frontier SV, the third generation of a midsize truck that has been providing drivers with exceptional capability since 1997. The 2022 Frontier has a more rugged look than older models, with a bold frontend featuring a strong grille offset by a pair of rectangular headlights. While it may be a midsize truck, it resembles a larger model.

It also has all of the latest technology and features you can desire. The Frontier SV gives you options that many other midsize trucks do not, such as a King Cab or Crew Cab, so you can decide if you need a larger back row of seats in your truck. You also get to choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The base MSRP on the 2022 Frontier SV is only $31,390, making it a very affordable truck for most drivers.[a] It gives you more features than the entry-level Frontier S and more affordability and options than the PRO-X and PRO-4X models.

  • Performance

Nissan has equipped every model of the 2022 Frontier with a standard 3.8-liter V6 gas engine. This powerful engine features 24 valves feeding the six cylinders in a dual overhead camshaft configuration. It has an aluminum block and head and utilizes direct fuel injection to deliver 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. That is a best-in-class figure for horsepower. The 2022 Nissan Frontier SV pairs its V6 engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. This has been specifically designed and tuned to match the Frontier’s engine, maximizing efficiency and acceleration on this truck.

    Handling and Acceleration

The 2022 Nissan Frontier features a Dana rear axle, regardless of which drivetrain you choose. If you do opt for four-wheel drive on your 2022 Frontier SV, you will also get a switch-operated two-speed transfer case. This will allow you to switch to four-wheel drive low-range when maximum traction is required. The Frontier has a standard 126-inch wheelbase, making it easy to maneuver and corner, especially on tight turns.

This is one surprisingly quick truck. The 2022 Frontier can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 113 mph. The front features an independent double-wishbone suspension with a stabilizer bar, while the rear has a multi-leaf suspension system with a solid axle. The Frontier SV rides on a set of 17-inch split-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. This looks great and will give you a comfortable, smooth ride.

    Fuel Economy

While most trucks are not known for their fuel efficiency, it seems that Nissan is looking to change that perception. The 2022 Nissan Frontier SV will give you surprisingly solid fuel economy for a truck of its power and capability. If you decide to go with rear-wheel drive on your Frontier SV, you can expect to get 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined. Opting for four-wheel drive will have a slight impact on fuel economy, but the numbers are still quite respectable. The four-wheel drive 2022 Frontier SV delivers 17 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway, and 19 MPG combined.

    Getting the Job Done

One complaint many truck enthusiasts have about midsize pickups is that they just don’t have the strength to do the job. The common belief is that these midsize trucks don’t have the power to tow large trailers or carry heavy loads. The 2022 Nissan Frontier SV shows that these beliefs are wrong, giving you the kind of towing and hauling ability usually only seen in much larger trucks.

The powerful 3.8-liter V6 gas engine that comes standard on the 2022 Nissan Frontier SV gives you excellent towing capability. The maximum towing capacity will depend on the cab style and drivetrain you choose. If you opt for a King Cab with rear-wheel drive, you will get the most towing capability, a very impressive 6,670 lbs. If you decide to get a Crew Cab with rear-wheel drive, the max trailering figure will drop slightly to 6,530 lbs. The King Cab with four-wheel drive still has an impressive towing capacity of 6,470 lbs, as does the Crew Cab with four-wheel drive, which will allow you to tow up to 6,330 lbs.

When it comes to hauling heavy loads, the 2022 Nissan Frontier SV is practically unmatched. Nissan has decided to equip the Frontier SV with two different bed sizes, depending on the cab style you choose. If you opt for a King Cab, you get a 73.3-inch bed capable of carrying up to 1,610 lbs of payload with rear-wheel drive or 1,440 lbs with four-wheel drive. As for the Crew Cab, Nissan has given this style of the 2022 Frontier SV a standard 59.5-inch bed, which can carry up to 1,480 lbs of cargo with rear-wheel drive or 1,290 lbs when equipped with four-wheel drive. However, the Crew Cab can also be paired with the long bed at the cost of some payload capacity.

Taking Trucks to the Next Level

Nissan has taken trucks to the next level with the interior of the 2022 Nissan Frontier SV. No matter which cab style you choose, you will get standard front Zero Gravity seats with exceptional support to reduce the fatigue caused by long drives. It will also give you the rest you need if you use your Frontier SV for work. The six-way power driver seat even comes with two-way lumbar support, which will help keep your back from stiffening up.

    Interior Dimensions

The Frontier SV is offered in two cab styles: King Cab and Crew Cab. Each has two rows of seats, with the King Cab providing room for up to four passengers while the Crew Cab can seat five. You can tell the difference by looking at the doors of the cab; the Crew Cab has four full-size doors while the King Cab has two full-size and two half-size doors. The Crew Cab also offers more overall passenger space, with 100.1 cu.ft. compared to 85.6 cu.ft. in the King Cab. The two cab styles provide almost exactly the same amount of space for the driver and front seat passenger, with 42.3 inches of legroom, 58.2 inches of shoulder room, and 54.3 inches of hip room. However, the Crew Cab gives the front row slightly more headroom, at 39.9 inches compared to 39.7 inches in the King Cab model of the Frontier SV.

The key difference between the two cab sizes can be seen in the back row. Where the Frontier SV Crew Cab will give you 33.2 inches of legroom in the second row, the King Cab is a little tighter at 26.2 inches. Similarly, it has more headroom, with 38.6 inches in the Crew Cab to 36.6 inches in the King Cab. Finally, the rear row of the Frontier SV Crew Cab is roomier, with 58.3 inches of shoulder room and 53.7 inches of hip room, which is more than the 52.4 inches of shoulder room and 52.2 inches of hip room in the back row of the Frontier SV King Cab. This is why the Crew Cab can seat one extra passenger.

  • Technology

The infotainment screen in a 2022 Nissan Frontier is shown.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier SV comes equipped with the NissanConnect infotainment system on an 8-inch color touchscreen display. This includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, so you can easily stream your favorite apps and music on the NissanConnect system. The sound system consists of six speakers strategically placed around the cabin of the Frontier SV, allowing you and your passengers to enjoy music, sports, talk, news, and comedy, all courtesy of the three-month complimentary subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio.

If you really love music, then you might consider springing for the optional premium audio system. This consists of ten speakers, including subwoofers, all designed by Fender, the brand that brought you the Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. The Fender premium audio system is available as an upgrade on the Crew Cab short bed model of the 2022 Frontier SV.

The NissanConnect system on the Frontier SV also features hands-free smartphone connectivity through Bluetooth. The system has a hands-free Text Messaging Assistant that will allow you to playback and respond to text messages on the NissanConnect display using voice commands. This will help you focus on the road while making calls and texts, keeping you and your passengers safer on your trips.

    Standard Safety Features

Nissan has become one of the leading automakers when it comes to passenger safety. This is the result of the high-tech protection provided by the Safety Shield 360 system that comes standard on the 2022 Nissan Frontier SV. The first of the standard driver assistance features is a Rearview Monitor. This will come in handy on your Frontier SV when you are backing out of a parking spot or hitching a trailer up to your truck.

The 2022 Frontier SV also has Intelligent Forward Collision Warning. If the system detects an imminent collision, it will sound an alarm so that you can take evasive action. The alarm will also trigger Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. This system engages the brakes so you can avoid hitting the other vehicle or pedestrian, or if a collision is unavoidable, it will help to reduce the impact of the crash.

Finally, the Safety Shield 360 system on the Nissan Frontier SV features Intelligent Driver Alertness. This utilizes intelligent software to monitor your driving patterns and warn you if the system detects you are distracted or getting drowsy. If this happens, it will send you an alert so you can better focus or pull over to take a break from driving.
